The musical “Funny Girl” opens on Broadway starring Barbra Streisand

Making her mark on Broadway, Barbra Streisand found her way into the role of Brice in the musical “Funny Girl.” The casting of someone to play the role of Brice seemed more challenging than expected: the directors had about three girls in one way or another backing out of the role, until Streisand came along.

On March 26th 1964, the musical “Funny Girl” opened on Broadway, starring Barbra Streisand as Brice. Before even hitting stage on Broadway the team had strategically decided to do shows in smaller venues, to try out changes here and there. The purpose was so that they could have a live audience react to some changes and ultimately so the critics would see the finalized perfected version of the musical.

“Funny Girl” was nominated for eight Tony awards, and even though it did not win any awards it is considered a great musical for its time.
