The first movie adapted from a board game, Clue, opens nationally

Clue is a comedy mystery film based on the board game with the same name.  The story takes place in a Gothic Revival mansion and is styled after other various murder/mystery dinner parties.

On this day, December 13, in 1985, Clue made its debut in theaters.  To keep the nature of the board game consistent with the film, the movie was shown with one of three possible endings—with each theater receiving a different ending.  This might have led to the mixed reviews that the film received.  However, when the film was released to home theaters, all three endings were included.  The film ultimately grossed $14,643,997 domestically, which was just short of its 15,000,000 budget.
