Aztec ruler Montezuma welcomes Hernán Cortés into Aztec Capital, Tenochtitlan with a great celebration

Montezuma was the 9th ruler of Tenochtitlan, the capitol of the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs were a sophisticated ancient society, besides their barbaric tendencies of capturing enemies and using them as human sacrifices.

On this day November 8th, in 1519, Montezuma welcomes Hernán Cortés into the Aztec Capital, Tenochtitlan with a great celebration. Montezuma gave Cortés an Aztec calendar, made of one ring of solid gold and another ring of silver. Cortés melted it down for its material value.

Montezuma invited Cortés to come with his men and stay at his palace for several months. Eventually much of the army came to be hosted by Montezuma. Eventually Montezuma became a captive in his own palace, although how this exactly happened is unknown. What is known is that Cortés eventually conquered and destroyed the Aztec Empire, and for this reason Montezuma’s Revenge makes sense. Note to the world, watch out who you allow to stay at your house! They may try to take it from you.
