Yankees legend Mickey Mantle cracks the 500th home run of his career against the Baltimore Orioles.

In the pre-steroid Era, hitting 500 homeruns was a big deal.  The 500th home run was exciting, celebratory, and the talk of the Sports world.  But when it happens today, it gets a very little amount of fanfare.

It was on this day, May 14th, 1967, that the great Mickey Mantle smacked the 500th home run of this career.   During the 7th inning of a game against the Baltimore Orioles, Mantle hit a blast which turned out to be the difference in a 6 – 5 Yankees victory.

Mickey Mantle had one of the best careers ever.  He appeared in 12 world series, winning 7 of them.  He won 3 MVP awards and played in the all-star game 20 times.  His best season came in 1956, when he led the league in average, home runs, and RBIS – winning the triple crown.
