For a sports team, there are few accomplishments that are as rare as going undefeated.  In professional sports, the chance of doing so is made even more difficult with tough competition week in and week out.  In the NFL, the first team to reach the coveted undefeated mark was the Miami Dolphins.

On this day, December 16th, in 1972, the Miami Dolphins became the first ever NFL team to go undefeated with a 14-0 Record. The Dolphins completed their perfect season in the playoffs winning 17 total games as they beat the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl 14-7.  In their 1972 season, the Dolphins also set an NFL single-season rushing record with two backs over the thousand yard rushing mark.

For their efforts, the 1972 Dolphins are considered by some to be the greatest team in NFL history.  The Dolphins  repeated their championship performance in 1973, only losing 2 games.
