The Miami Dolphins complete the perfect season, winning the Super Bowl and finishing 17-0

Perfection in sports is a very rare thing.  Professional athletes are a resilient bunch and even the greatest teams have nights when they are beat.  This is why the quest for perfection always excites sports fans because it is so rare.

On this day, January 14th, in 1973, the Miami Dolphins completed the first perfect season in NFL history.  The Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII by a score of 14 – 7.

The Dolphins finished with a 17 – 0 record.  And in today’s NFL, a team would have to go 19 – 0 to go undefeated as two more games have been added to the schedule.  The New England Patriots came close in 2007-08, winning their first 18 games, but they fell to the New York Giants 17-14 in the Super Bowl to end their attempt at perfection.
