Mets Defeat Red Sox in Game 7 of World Series

Established in 1962, the New York Mets have often been out-shined by the New York Yankees, but they’ve still had their moments of glory over the years.

On this day, October 27th, in 1986, the Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series.  The Mets had finished the 1986 season in dominant fashion with a 108-54 record, but their World Series opponent, the Boston Red Sox, would prove to be a formidable one.  In Game 6, the Mets were on brink of elimination when an error by Bill Buckner of the Sox secured victory. Game 7 would also end in a comeback with the Mets turning a three run deficit into a three run, 8-5, victory.

Mets fans were overjoyed with the World Series victory, but the collapse by the Red Sox overshadowed the Mets’ win.  The New York Times introduced the nation to the idea of the “Babe Ruth Curse,” which related to a string of misfortune for the Red Sox after trading away Babe Ruth.
