Men At Work’s hit “Down Under” charts #1 on the UK pop music chart

Men At Work, a five member Australian-rock group, began their musical career in Melbourne, Australia. They became a global success, and had several #1 hits in New Zealand, the UK, America and Britain.

On this day, January 29, in 1983, Men At Work’s single, “Down Under,” charted #1 on the UK top 40 for its fourth consecutive day. At this time in history with their new hit single, Men At Work had achieved a milestone only known to the Beatles and Rod Stewart.

Sadly, “Down Under is a plagiarized version of an Australian children’s folk tune, and substantial amounts of the flute melody in the song encroach on the copyright laws of the children’s tune. The music company Larrikin, who holds the rights to the original tune, filed a lawsuit against Men At Work. With the court’s ruling, 60 percent of Down Under’s earnings were allocated to Larrikin Music Publishing.
