Paul McCartney and Jane Asher engaged

When George Harrison sang “Love You To,” about the brevity of life and importance of love, he was singing, unknowingly, Paul McCartney’s ode to Jane Asher. They met in London, in 1963, when the Beatles were headlining a BBC concert performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Asher, a correspondent and teen celebrity, went to the performance for a series of photo shoots for Radio Times and to write a piece on the Fab Four. They had met previously before and remembered her charm. This time, the meeting touched off sparks of romance

On this day, December 25, in 1967, after four years together Paul McCartney and Jane Asher announced their engagement to be married.

McCartney later recalled their meeting that day: “We all said ‘Will you marry me?’ which is what we said to every girl at the time. She was a rare London bird, the sort we’d always heard about.” Soon after their romance was confirmed, he moved into the Asher family home, a five-story townhouse on Wimpole Street. Their upper-middle class background greatly broadened his horizons. Some of McCartney’s best work came from his time with Asher.
