Heading for the New World, the Mayflower leaves port in England.

In the modern age we sometimes forget how lucky we are to live in a time and place that gives the privilege of practicing the religion of our choice or to not practice any religion at all. Because in 17th century England, religious prosecution was at an all time high.

On this day September 16th, in 1620 The Mayflower left the port in England heading for the New World. The 102 passengers and 30 crew members in the small vessel were English and Dutch religious separatists, searching for an opportunity to practice their religion in peace and fleeing religious persecution.

On the voyage the ship experienced strong Atlantic storms that caused structural damage and leaks.  But the worst came in their first winter in Cape Cod. That winter killed almost half of the original company.
