The Marvelettes release top hit “Please, Mr. Postman”

The Marvelettes were Motown’s most successful female group.  They set the precedent for later Motown girl groups, including the Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas.

On this day, December 11, in 1965, The Marvelettes released their first single and top hit, “Please, Mr. Postman.”  It took the song fourteen weeks to reach the top position on the pop chart—a record at the time.  Also, the song stayed at the #1 position on the Billboard R&B chart for seven consecutive weeks.

An album for the Marvelettes was rush released, but neither it nor their subsequent albums were successful in making the charts.  Although their fad was slowly dying, the Marvelettes were still a popular tour group when performing with different Motown ensemble tours.
