Malcolm X the movie premieres, starring Denzel Washington, directed by Spike Lee

Malcolm X was an African American human rights activist and arguably one of the most influential African-Americans in history.  He advocated for the rights of African-Americans and was accused of preaching black supremacy, anti-Semitism, racism, and violence.

It was today, November 20, 1992, that the Malcolm X movie premiered, starring Denzel Washington and directed by Spike Lee.  The movie, all about the influential leader, focuses on many events in Malcolm X’s life such as his incarceration, conversion to Islam, marriage to Betty X, pilgrimage to Mecca, mother and father’s deaths as well as his assassination.

Roger Ebert ranked Malcolm X as #1 on his Top 10 list for 1992.  Washington was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Actor.  The movie was selected to be placed in the United States National Film Registry in 2010.
