Magic Johnson Makes Debut with Lakers

Though his career was cut short, Earvin “Magic” Johnson still established himself as one of the greatest players in NBA history.  Being one of the best passers in the league, Johnson helped the Los Angeles Lakers win five NBA Championships and he himself took three NBA MVP awards.

On this day, October 12th, in 1979, Magic Johnson made his debut for the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson was drafted first overall by the Lakers, after winning the NCAA Championship with Michigan State his final year, so his first game was highly anticipated.  Magic’s first game was played for a national audience against the Los Angeles Clippers.  Johnson did not disappoint fan with a few memorable passes and steals.

Magic Johnson finished his rookie year averaging 18 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game.  He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
