Louisiana Superdome’s First NFL Game

For more than 30 years, the Superdome has been one of the most active football stadiums in the South.  The stadium is home to the New Orleans Saints, the Division I-A Tulane Green Wave football team, the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the BCS National Championship game every four years.

On this day, August 9th, in 1975, the Louisiana Superdome hosted its first NFL game with the Houston Oilers defeating the New Orleans Saints 13-7. The project began in 1971 and was officially opened on August 3, 1975. The Superdome is the largest fixed dome structure in the world and has a steel frame that covers 13 acres. The Superdome has a capacity of more than 75,000 for football games and 55,000 for basketball.  The dome cost $134 million, or $579 million 2012 dollars, to build.

The Louisiana Superdome was renamed the Mercedes-Benz Superodme in October 2011.
