The Father of Cinematography’s First Film

While the Lumiere brothers and Thomas Edison get much of the credit as being the forefathers of the moving image, Louis Le Prince, widely known as “The Father of Cinematography” was right there with the creators of the movie medium. Le Prince, in fact, is believed to have been the first of all three parties to have ever filmed moving images on paper film with a single lens camera.

On October 14, 1888, Louis Le Prince filmed the Roundhay Garden Scene at 12 frames per second for 2.11 seconds. He recorded his film at the house of Joseph and Sarah Whitley in Leeds and his son Adolphe can be seen in it.

Along with The Gardener and Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory by the Lumiers brothers, Roundhay Garden Scene has become a staple of early cinema and it is the oldest existing film still around today.
