Lou Gehrig is called out for passing a runner after hitting a homerun – costing himself the AL homerun title.

Lou Gehrig is one of the greatest Yankees of all-time.  He was also a great man whose life was sadly cut short by a tragic illness called ALS, which is also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.  Lou had an awesome major league baseball career, but he also was involved with some awkward incidents.

It was on this day, April 26th, 1931, that Lou Gehrig was called out for passing a runner after hitting a home run.  The mistake was a costly one, as it resulted in him not winning the American League home run title.

Yankee Lyn Lary was on first base when Lou hit the home run, but he thought that the ball was caught by an outfielder. When Lary left the field, Lou was called out for passing the runner.  So, the incident was not Lou’s fault, as it was a clear home run, but at the end of the year, when he tied Babe Ruth with 46 home runs, people realized that Lyn Lary cost Lou Gherig the AL home run title.
