Lou Gehrig hits 4 straight home runs and he just misses a home run during his 5th at bat

One major league record that has withstood the test of time is home runs in a Baseball game.  It has been done 15 times in history and no one has ever done it twice.  The most recent player to do it was Carlos Delgado in September of 2003. In the American League – the first player to ever accomplish the feat was Lou Gehrig.

It was on this day, June 3rd, 1932, that Lou Gehrig smashed 4 straight home runs against the Philadelphia Athletics.  During his 5th at bat, Gehrig smashed a ball that seamed headed over the center field fence but Al Simmons made a leaping catch to record the out.

Many people believe 5 home runs in a game will never happen.  However, Lou Gherig came so very close 80 years ago today.  The Iron Horse as they called him was one of the greatest hitters ever, tragically ALS cut his life well too short, at the age of 36.
