The London Eye (Millennium Ferris Wheel) opens and becomes one of London’s most notable tourist attractions

The tallest Ferris wheel in Europe is located on the banks of the River Thames in England. It reaches a staggering height of 443 feet and has a diameter of 394 feet. When it was built, the London Eye was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world.

It was on this day, October 10th, in 1999 that the London Eye Millennium Ferris Wheel opened and became one of London’s most notable tourist attractions.

Although it has since been surpassed by the Star of Nanchang Ferris wheel in China and the Singapore Flyer, the London Eye still remains the tallest cantilevered observation wheel in the world, meaning that the Ferris wheel is supported by an A-frame on one side only. The attraction, as the most popular paid tourist spot in the United Kingdom, draws over 3.5 million tourists annually.
