Liquor stores are authorized in the United States for the first time – the first location is in Pennsylvania.

The United State’s Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution was a result of the temperance movement, and it prohibited the manufacture and sale of alcohol. As a result of the Amendment, crime rates increased due to a growing black market.

On this day, November 29th, in 1933, liquor stores were authorized to operate in the United States for the first time. The first location to authorize these sales was in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board was officially organized four days before liquor sales became legal in the state. The Board’s goal was to discourage liquor sales by making purchases expensive and inconvenient. Despite being the first location to repeal Prohibition, the state of Pennsylvania has tight licensing requirements enforced by the PLCB.
