Lenny Wilkens becomes 1st coach in NBA history to win 1,000 regular season games

Often in sports, the record holders don’t have the most championships.  A player who scores the most points in a game, or the coach that coaches in the most games, or a team that has the most wins may not correlate to championships.  And this certainly was the case for Lenny Wilkins.

It was on this day, March 1st, in 1996, that Lenny Wilkins won his 1,000th regular season game.   Lenny did this despite winning only 1 NBA championship as a coach, in 1978 – 1979 with Seattle.

Lenny Wilkins would finish his coaching career with 1,332 wins.  Over 32 seasons, he led the SEatllte SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks. He also spent 15 years in the NBA as a point guard and was a 9-time All-Star as well as the 1971 All-Star Game MVP.
