Julius Erving makes a memorable move in Game 4 of the 1980 Finals against the Lakers.

Several plays stand out as the most famous in NBA history.  Jordan’s buzzer beater over the Cavs, Magic’s sky hook against the Celtics, Reggie Miller’s back to back three pointers against the Knicks.  And then there is Dr. J – who made a move in an NBA finals game which had never been witnessed before.

It was on this day, May 11th, 1980, that Julius Erving made a spectacular move in Game 4 of the NBA finals.  Playing against the Lakers, Julius went for a layup on the right side of the basket, and when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar attempted to block the shot, Erving from behind the basket somehow put the ball up on the other side of the rim against the back board and in.

It was a miraculous move, and it helped carry the 76ers to a 105-102 victory.  The 76ers tied the series up at two games a piece but unfortunately for Sixers fans, the Lakers would win the next two games en route to the NBA title.  But even though the Lakers won the title, Dr J’s circus shot continues to be talked about after all of these years.
