The one and only Julius Erving (Dr. J) becomes the 3rd NBA player to score 30,000 points.

In the 80s, Philadelphia Sports fans had a treat.  This treat was a legendary basketball player who did things on a court that had never been done before.  And his trademark nickname added to his allure as one of the great basketball players ever.

It was on this day, April 17th, 1987, that Julius Erving became the 3rd NBA Player to score 30,000 points. Known as Dr. J, Julius joined the elite company of Wilt Chamerlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabar.

Since that time, both Karl Malone and Michael Jordan reached the 30,000 point plateau.  And Kobe Bryant is likely to reach 30,000 points as well.  But north of that, it may be a long time before we see another 30,000 point scorer – and Dr. J did it with class and excitement.  And most importantly, he brought an NBA championship to Philadelphia, and this is what he’ll always be remembered for.
