J.R.R. Tolkien publishes “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again”; w/ awards and acclaim

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, formally known as The Hobbit, is a children’s fantasy novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien that focuses on personal growth, heroism, and warfare based on Tolkien’s experience during WWI.

On this day, September 21st, in 1937, the fairy tale novel The Hobbit is published by George Allen and Unwin Ltd. of London. Over 1,500 copies were printed and sold within the first two months. In addition, it is offered in over forty languages but was often unavailable in the wartime era due to paper rationing.

The Hobbit’s legacy did not end there and in 1950 the three-volume sequel The Lord of the Rings was published.
