The great Joe DiMaggio makes his Yankee debut in an exhibition game

Some of the most famous athletes of all-time played for the New York Yankees.  Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Derek Jeter were some of the best athletes of their time, and they all played in the Bronx.  One Yankee in particular made a splash right away, and his legend has only grown with time.

It was on this day, March 17th, 1936, that Joe DiMaggio made his Yankee debut.  During an exhibition game against the Cardinals, Joe had 4 hits in an 8 – 7 loss.

“Joltin Joe” would play his entire career as a Yankee.  He had a 56 game hitting streak which is a record that has withstood the test of time.  Joe remains the only major league player to be invited to play in the All-Star game during every season of his career.  DiMaggio was not only one of the greatest Yankees ever, he was one of the greatest baseball players ever.
