A year after John F. Kennedy was elected Senator, he married Jacqueline Bouvier

College graduate Jacqueline Bouvier began dating the young Massachusetts senator John F. Kennedy in 1951 and two years later Kennedy proposed with a 2.88-carat-diamond and emerald ring.

On this day, September 12th, in 1953, Kennedy and Bouvier were pronounced husband and wife in front of 800 guests at the Roman Catholic Church, St. Mary’s, in Newport, Rhode Island. This fabulous wedding was short but sweet, and the following reception seated over 1,200 guests at the 300-acre oceanfront estate of the Hammersmith Farm.

To this day, the Kennedy’s are recorded in history as the youngest presidential couple.
