The first location of the American mid-range department store JCPenney opened in Piano, Texas. The store also operates catalog sales merchant offices around the nation.

It was on this day, October 11th, in 1929 that JCPenney opened a location in Milford, Delaware, making JCPenney present in all 48 states of the contiguous United States.

There eventually came to be over 1,000 department stores located in all 50 U.S. states and in Puerto Rico. In the mid-1950s, shops moved from the downtown areas to suburban shopping malls. JCPenney followed the trend by building its stores primarily in suburban shopping malls. The stores sell traditional merchandise in addition to housing Sephora, various restaurants, and jewelry repair counters.
