Istanbul is smote with an earthquake known as “The Lesser Judgment Day”.

No matter how far civilizations progress and advance there has always been a constant reaction to earthquakes – DUCK AND COVER! Mother nature continuously reminds us of how powerful she really is and how she can destroy anything that crosses her path.

On this day September 10th, in 1509 Istanbul is smote with an earthquake known as “The Lesser Judgment Day”. At approximately 10pm Istanbul was struck with the sheer force of an estimated magnitude of 7.3. The city experienced aftershocks of 45 days and also suffered a tsunami.

The damage was so severe that over a thousand houses and 109 mosques were destroyed. In addition to this an estimated 10,000 people died throughout the entire ordeal. The title given to it is meant to be reminiscent of the Christian theological belief of the Judgment Day that is to come; it’s spoken about in the book of Revelation.
