Some records in sports are more fun than they are meaningful. Often a player will accomplish something by a stroke of luck which has never been accomplished before.
It was on this day, April 11th, 1989, that Ron Hextall scored a goal in the NHL playoffs. What made the goal special was the fact that Ron Hextall was a goalie – becoming the first goalie to ever score a playoff goal.
During the prior season, Hextall had become the first goalie to score a goal when he shot one into an empty net against the Bruins. The playoff goal was scored in a Flyers victory against the Washington Capitals. Hextall shot the puck from behind his own goal line and it traveled the length of the ice into the Capitals’ net.
