Twins Norris & Ross McWhirter first publish the “Guinness Book of World Records”

The Guinness Book of Records, written to showcase yearly achievements, ironically has earned its own record.  It is the best-selling copyrighted book series of all time, and it is also one of the most frequently stolen books from US public libraries.

It was on this day, August 27th, in 1955 that twins Norris & Ross McWhirter first published the Guinness Book of World Records.

Since its first publication, the franchise has extended beyond just print.  The organization has become the primary international authority on record cataloging, and it now employs official record adjudicators to verify record statuses.  Guinness Records has also expanded to include museums and television series.
