George Mason stuns #1 seed Connecticut 86 – 84 to advance to the final four

Cinderella comes to the NCAA tournament every now and then.  And when an unheard of team defeats a Powerhouse to get to the final four – it is a truly special moment.  And in 2006, a small school from Virginia made one of the biggest splashes of all-time.

It was on this day, March 27th, 2006, that George Mason defeated #1 seed Connecticut in the elite 8.  The win would earn George Mason a final four birth as a #11 seed.

Connecticut was the favorite to win the NCAA tournament.  They had several future NBA players while George Mason had none.  However, in an NCAA tournament game, anything can happen, and George Mason proved this.  George Mason would lose to the Florida Gators in the final four but the legacy of what that team accomplished still lives on today.
