Frank Robinson hits one out

Baltimore Stadium, a.k.a. Municipal Stadium, a.k.a. Venable Stadium (named for the park it was built at), opened in 1922. To football, the early Army-Navy games. Baseball was added when a $6 million renovation added a roofless deck and seats, creating Memorial Stadium in honor of the great Babe Ruth, and the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore to become the Orioles. The renovations to make it amenable to baseball made it a pitcher’s park all the way. Only home run was ever recorded as leaving the stadium completely — and that was hit by the future Hall of Famer Frank Robinson.

On this day, May 8, 1966, during a Mothers Day matchup, the Orioles’ hitter Frank Robinson batted a pitch out of the park. A flag was erected later at the spot where the ball left the stadium, reading simply “HERE,” as if to challenge hitter to repeat the feat, but none ever could.

The most memorable event to take place at the stadium was not sports-related at all. On December 19, 1976, minutes after the end of an NFL playoff game, a Piper Cherokee private plane flew low over the stadium and crashed into the upper deck over the south end zone. Nobody was hurt, including the pilot, who was arrested for violating safety protocols.
