Founding of Sao Paulo, Brazil

Sao Paulo has become the largest city in Brazil, and one of the largest cities in the world with a population of over 11,000,000. The city is named after Saint Paul, better known as Paul the Apostle from the New Testament. An idea of Paul’s, which was later rehashed and further discussed by Saint Hippolytus, was that salvation was attained from faith, and not by stressing superficial legal ideas. Paul is also attributed for having influenced Martin Luther, father of the Protestant sector of Christianity. For the record, Paul has also surely played a key role in Sao Paul0, being that 73% of its population is Catholic.

On this day January 25th, in 1554, the city of Sao Paulo is founded. The city was founded by two Catholic missionaries Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta whose mission was two-fold. The first reason was to convert the indigenous people of Brazil and Sao Paulo.  The second reason hinged upon the first, and it was so that the missionaries could help control the indigenous people for the Portuguese Crown.  Both of these missionaries were highly influential, and Ancheita is considered to be the first Brazilian Poet.

Sao Paolo has grown tremendously and is one of the metropolitan capitals of the world with an enormous financial district.  Located in Southeastern Brazil, Sao Paulo is one of the wealthiest cities in the world.  What makes it even more interesting is the huge number of immigrants that the city has – most of them being Italian. Between its restaurants, luxury items, and numerous hotspots, it’s no wonder that the city has become one of the most sought after vacation spots in the world.
