Developed by the great Edwin Armstrong, FM Radio – for the first time – is demonstrated in the US across 5 states.

The invention of the radio allowed for significantly easier communication. Ships could communicate with one another as well as with land bases. Families could gather around their radio to hear the daily news. Walkie talkies could keep people connected.

It was on this day, January 5th, in 1940 that FM Radio was demonstrated for the first time in the United States across five states.

Edwin Armstrong invented the technology of wide-band frequency modulation, or FM Radio. Instead of varying the amplitude of radio waves as previous technology did, Armstrong’s method varied the frequency of the waves. As a result, static was reduced because a wider range of audio frequencies could be used.
