The first United States Football League game is played after New Orleans businessman David Dixon expands the sport to the South

The United States Football league consisted of eighteen teams and their games took place while the National Football League was in their off-season. The founders of the league believed that America’s love of football would support a second league that spectators could follow while the NFL was on hiatus.

On March 6th 1983, the first United States Football League game was played after New Orleans businessman David Dixon expanded the sport to the South. It was a very successful league at first and this first game would prove the commitment that many people devoted to it. Securing a venue for such a football game was a mission, but nonetheless the first USFL game made history.

Unfortunately due to franchise issues and their competition with the National Football League the United States Football League ceased to exist in 1987.
