First Skyscraper Construction Begins

A skyscraper by definition has no official height level requirement. A building may solely be named a “skyscraper” because of its comparison to the surrounding environment.

It was on this day, May 1st, in 1885 that the first skyscraper went under construction. Although New York has become the city of the skyscrapers, the first one was a mere 10-story building located on the corner of LaSalle and Adams in Chicago.

If this ten-story construction seems unlike the current type of skyscraper, then that’s because it is. Modern skyscrapers are now called by the term “supertalls,” which also has no definition for height requirements but distinguishes itself from the buildings of early skyscraper ancestry.
