The first issue of Time magazine appears on newsstands with Joseph G. Cannon on the cover

Two Yale classmates who had attained previous experience by working for the Yale Daily News started America’s first weekly news magazine. Now known for its red border on the cover, Time magazine started off with a different look.

On this day, March 3rd, 1923, the first issue of Time magazine appeared on newsstands with Joseph G. Cannon on the cover. Cannon was the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, who at that time had served a total of 23 terms and was ready to retire. Just his image on the cover told part of the story of what would be written inside of the magazine.

The two men started off with a basic idea of a simple newspaper magazine that has now grown into a bigger business involving other magazines such as Fortune, Life magazine, and Sports Illustrated.
