The first commercial radio station is introduced in Detroit, Michigan

While on our way to work or just driving to a certain location many drivers have the radio playing on in the background. We attempt to switch stations while commercials are on because, let’s face it, that’s not what we want to be hearing. Back in the day people would tune in to the radio from their home and would sit through all of the commercials as if it were some sort of news.

August 20th 1920: The first commercial radio station is introduced in Detroit, Michigan. The first commercial radio station was called 8MK from Detroit, then it’s named was changed to WBL and finally ended up with the name WWJ. The station first broadcasted itself from The Detroit News newspaper building; this was the home of the station.

It received its commercial license and that’s when it changed its name to WBL and shortly to WWJ. This station marks history because it has many first in broadcasting history.
