Fiji, which is famous for its bottled water, ceased being British possession.

Fiji Water was opened in 1996 by a businessman David Gilmour, not to be confused with Pink Floyd’s guitarist with the same name. Over 150 million years ago Fiji’s islands were formed from volcanoes, which often times are beneath miles of ocean water. Fiji is an archipelago, which is a collection of many small islands. There are 332 islands in Fiji, of which 110 are inhabited.

On this day October 10th, in 1970, Fiji ceased being a British possession. This British colony lasted nearly 100 years, and prior to the British the Dutch controlled Fiji beginning with Abel Tasman’s visit to the island.

Most of the 850,000 population lives either on the island of Viti Levu or Vanua Levu. Archeological evidence of inhabitation goes back to 1000-3500 BC from pottery found on the island. Fiji has numerous forests, and it has one of the most developed economies for its region amidst the Pacific Islands. Fiji is also famous for its openness to tourists, clear waters, and affordable vacationing.
