Facebook Launched by Mark Zuckerberg

In the early 2000s, social networking websites grew from an obscure novelty to an international phenomenon.  Social networking sites allow internet users to share their thoughts, lives and pictures with their friends, families and acquaintances. While many social networking sites have come into existence, there have been few to find as much success as Facebook.

On this day, February 4th, in 2004, Facebook was launched by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg.  The site was initially intended solely for Harvard students, giving them the opportunity to connect with their peers.  Facebook would slowly grow to include other prestigious universities, such as Stanford.  In a few years time, Facebook became open to everyone over the age of 13.  Since its launch, Facebook has added a variety of features, including casual games.

Although Facebook took its roots in the United States, the site quickly gained international popularity.  With over 800 million active users, it is now available in a variety of languages throughout the world.  The story of Facebook’s rise was also featured in the 2011 film The Social Network.
