Elvis Presley’s first movie, Love Me Tender, premieres in New York’s Paramount Theater

Elvis Presley was the American singing legend known as the “King of Rock and Roll” and became a cultural icon in the 20th century.  He was one of the originators of the fusion of country and rhythm and blues referred to as rockabilly.

It was on this day, November 15, 1956, that Elvis Presley’s first movie, “Love Me Tender,” premiered in New York’s Paramount Theater.  Elvis played Clint Reno, the youngest of four brothers who took care of his family while his elder siblings were off fighting in the American Civil War.  The movie did well in the box office and proved that Elvis could not only sing well, but that he could also act.

Elvis won three Grammy Awards, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music.  He has been inducted into several music halls of fame.  The King of Rock and Roll passed away on August 16, 1977 at the young age of 42.
