Sometimes the most memorable NBA Finals games come early on in the series. And this was certainly the case when the 76ers played the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2001 NBA finals. The Lakers had swept their way through the playoffs and many people were talking about this being the best Lakers team to ever play. However, AI and company had a different idea.
It was on this day, June 6th, 2001, that the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of the NBA finals. It was a classic back and fourth game with the 76ers prevailing 107 – 101 and with Iverson scoring 48 points.
One of the signature moments of the series came late in the 4th quarter when Iverson hit a jumper over Lakers guard Tyronn Lue. After a brilliant crossover from Iverson, Lue had fell to the ground in front of Iverson as the ball went in. Iverson elegantly stepped over Lue as he ran down to the other side of the court, and the Sixers never again relinquished the lead. However, the excitement in Philly was short lived, as the Lakers would win the next 4 games, winning the title in game 5 on the Sixers home court.
