The first Earth Day, a day dedicated to environmental awareness, is observed in San Francisco.

Environmental Awareness is all about being green. Companies promote themselves as being green to attract customers, celebrities speak about it, and people vote on it. What is it that makes environmental awareness so important? On planet Earth, although humans sometimes act as if we control everything, we in fact do not. We are bound by limited resources, and if we destroy an ecosystem or the ozone layer, we will have to face the consequences.

On this day March 21st, in 1970, the first Earth day was observed with approximately 20 million people. March 21st is the first day of spring. On this day people walk around, go outside, and recognize the glorious beauty that this world has to offer whilst acknowledging that our actions have an impact. For instance the release of CFC’s has proven to be fatal to the ozone layer, which is the reason why it has been banned for companies emitting too much CFC’s to continue operating.

This day is intended to teach people. In the 21st century Earth Day now expands to the entire world with over 175 countries participating, many of which turn Earth Day into earth week. As of 2009, April 22 was chosen to be International Mother Earth Day by the United Nations. John McConnell is attributed for having created this day. His interest sparked in environmental awareness while he was working at a plastic factory and came to realize the massive amounts of pollution. Earth Day surely has come a long way from 1970.
