Eagles Defeat Rams in NFL Championship

Prior to the Super Bowl era, the NFL’s champion was crowned in a game simply called the NFL Championship game.  In the 1940s, the Eagles established themselves as one of the NFL’s top franchises, winning the Championship in 1948.  The following season, the Eagles were poised to repeat.

On this day, December 18th, in 1949, the Philadelphia Eagles won the NFL Championship. The game was played against the Los Angeles Rams who lost 14-0 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, their home field.  The game was memorable for heavy rain and large amounts of mud.

The Philadelphia Eagles became the only NFL team to win back to back championships by shut out.  In 1948, the Eagles beat the Chicago Cardinals 7-0.
