Doug Williams becomes the first African-American quarterback to play in a Super Bowl and wins the MVP

Many people still talk about Washington Redskins quarterback Doug Williams.  He stepped up in the biggest game of his life and played an outstanding football game.

It was on this day, January 31st, 1988, that Doug Williams and the Washington Redskins defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII.  The Broncos jumped out to a 10 point lead early in the game, but then the Redskins scored the final 42 points of the game to win 42 – 10.

Doug Williams became the first African-American quarterback to play in a Super Bowl.  He was named Super Bowl MVP after throwing for 340 yards and 4 touchdown passes in the game.  It was a great day to be a Redskins fans, as the team set a ton of offensive records in route to the convincing victory.
