Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, featuring popular music artists, premieres on ABC TV

Don Kirshner, American song publisher and rock producer, was known as “The Man with a Gold Ear.”  He is well-known for managing the successful pop groups The Monkees, Kansas, and The Archies.  In 1972, ABC Television asked Kirshner to serve as the executive producer and creative consultant for their then-new In Concert series, which was scheduled to air every other week.  After leaving In Concert, he launched his own syndicated Rock Concert.

It was on this day, November 24, 1972, that Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, featuring popular music artists, premiered on ABC TV.  The program featured many popular performers of the time including The Eagles, KISS, The Rolling Stones, The Ramones, Kansas, and The Allman Brothers Band.

The show was unique because most music shows during that era only showed lip-synching. The show was hosted by Kirshner every season until the last, which was co-hosted by his son and daughter.
