The Disneyland Monorail System opens – it is the first daily operating monorail in the Western Hemisphere

Monorail transportation systems operate on a single rail. The idea dates back to 1897, when German engineer Eugen Langen called his elevated railway system by the name of the “one-railed suspension tramway.”

On this day, June 14th, in 1959, the Disneyland Monorail System opened, making it the first daily operating monorail in the Western Hemisphere and the first in the United States.

The Disneyland Monorail is located in Anaheim, California. Walt Disney originally anticipated monorail to be the future for public transportation. However, with more commuters purchasing automobiles instead, the monorail became an exclusive symbol of the Disney theme park.
