Disney’s first animated film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” is released, making more money at the box office than any other film before it.

The story familiar to people worldwide, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, introduces beautiful Snow White and the wicked Queen who arranges Snow White’s murder. The plot thickens as Snow White escapes her death and meets seven dwarves.

On this day, February 4th, in 1938, Disney releases its first full-length, animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. This film was Disney’s first motion picture with color and sound, and the first to distribute a movie soundtrack album. Snow White was released on VHS in 1994 and sold 10 million copies within the first week. A couple weeks later, the film made more money in the box office than Aladdin, with sales of over 50 million copies worldwide. Although Snow White was the first Disney feature created, it was the last to be distributed on cassette.

The Snow White feature introduced the use of the multi-plane camera, which produces a three-dimensional effect. Also, the method of using live actors’ voices as the animated characters was first present in Snow White. To this day, Snow White is still an international classical charmer and the forerunner for animated motion pictures.
