Diego Maradona scores the famous Hand of God goal as Argentina defeats England 2 – 1

One of the most famous moments in the history of World Cup Soccer happens to also be one of the most controversial moments.

It was on this day, June 22nd, 1986, that the Diego Maradona scored the Hand of God goal vs England.  The goal helped Argentina to defeat England 2 – 1 in a World Cup quarter-finals match.  Maradona’s hand scored the goal, which of course is illegal, however the referees missed the call and the goal counted. The World saw highlights of the goal and knew it should of been disallowed but referee Ali Bin Nasser missed the call.

Later in that game, Maradona scored a second goal which was later called the Goal of the Century.  Maradona dribbled through 6 England players by himself in route to the goal which gave Argentina a 2 – 0 lead.  This classic goal was scored only 4 minutes after the Hand of God goal, and England never could recover from the 2 – 0 deficit.
