The Denver Nuggets are purchased for $65 million, making Betram Lee and Peter Bynoe the first African-American owners of a major sports franchise

Peter Bynoe is a Chicago attorney and businessman, and the only African-American equity partner in the Chicago office of DLA. He is among the most influential minority figures in sports law and management. Bynoe has also become a negotiator for professional sports teams’ venues and serves on several boards of directors.

Bynoe has been a sports fan all his life and was eager to get his ownership on some teams. This resulted in him joining a small group of African-American entrepreneurs who were attempting to purchase the Denver Nuggets basketball team.

On this day, October 21st, in 1989, Bynoe and his business partner, Betram Lee, bought a 37.5% share of the Denver Nuggets. This made them the first African-Americans to buy any part of a National Basketball Association team.
