Dave Debusschere Youngest NBA Coach

In most cases, the head coach of a professional team is a seasoned, wise figure with decades of experience in the sports world.  But Dave DeBusschere began his coaching career as an anomaly.  DeBusschere was drafted in 1962 by the Detroit Pistons and just a few years later he was named the team’s coach.

On this day, November 10th, in 1964, the Pistons named Dave DeBusschere coach at the age of 24.  Debusschere’s stint as coach made him the youngest coach in NBA history; he was an active player at the time.  DeBusschere remained coach for three seasons, but overall the experiment was considered unsuccessful and abandoned in 1967.

DeBusschere was traded to the New York Knicks in 1968 and had the best years of his career while playing as a Knick.  Debusschere would not coach again, but won two championships with the Knicks and earned a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
